Meet Tan Yan Lun, our Chief Product Officer (CPO) at JurisTech! Yan Lun started his journey with us as a fresh graduate back in 2009, and has been with us ever since! Prior to his appointment as the CPO in 2022, he was heading the Presales business unit in JurisTech for several years. He was tasked with leading the team to successfully assist clients by identifying their needs, providing recommendations and advice that will enable clients to achieve their business goals, and to also coordinating with other various stakeholders!

Now as the CPO of JurisTech, Yan Lun has been constantly challenging the status quo of what excellence is in building and delivering best-in-class products. He leads and provides the company with a clear vision for our overall product suites, and establishes best practices for product roadmaps so that as a company, we are able to exceptionally deliver the right solutions to meet our clients’ business needs and goals.

Here, we have invited Yan Lun to share his journey in becoming a CPO and some of the lessons learned along the way.

1. What are some of your personal values you can share with us?

There are a few values that I hold on a personal level. Firstly, I believe in continuous learning, because you never know when you’ll learn something new that is applicable to your work and personal life.

Secondly, is to always be open to ideas. Innovation and creativity are the driving forces behind the success of our products. Being open to ideas has helped me and my team to discover untapped opportunities, identify potential areas for growth, and stay ahead of the competition.

Thirdly, never say “it’s impossible”! Everything is possible with a little negotiation and managing expectations. All you have to do is to reframe your thoughts and the discussion from “impossible” to “challenging”. You will find that you are able to shift your focus to finding ways to overcome the obstacles rather than being defeated by them.

Lastly, it is to always understand the “why”, and the reason behind every little thing that happens. This value has truly helped me communicate more effectively with my team members, and it has also enabled me to understand our customers better – their motivations, pain points, and preferences. Knowing the “why” behind the “what” has allowed me and my team to develop products and features that not only meet our customer’s current needs but also their future needs, exceeding our customers’ expectations.

2. What is your leadership style like?

Personally, I like to help my team reach their own decisions. I do not believe in giving direct instructions (depending on the situation, of course) because I recognise that my way might not always be the best way. I’d like everyone to share their own ideas and we can discuss what is the best way to achieve the desired outcome.

3. How do you get the most out of your team? What role do you play in that?

As a CPO, I hold various responsibilities and lead a few teams. However, as of today, I believe in giving my team, the Collection Advisory Team (CAT) Team in JurisTech, the freedom to make their own decision as they see fit, while also being available and accessible to the team. This is so that whenever they hit any roadblocks, they would know that they have a place to seek advice or to discuss their roadblocks. This allows the team to learn and develop faster, on top of having higher engagement and better performance.

4. What are the changes you foresee in the near future since you joined the industry, and how do you plan to strategise and execute product-related activities within JurisTech?

When I first joined the company, the tech world was still in its infancy (iPhone 3GS and WhatsApp did not even exist yet!). The world we live in today has changed so much since then. People nowadays are interacting with apps and browsers on their phones more than before. Hence, I believe that the newer generation of products should be more customer-centric, attractive, and interactive. Technology shouldn’t be a barrier to getting work done, it should complement it.

To strategise and execute product-related activities within our company, we plan to focus on the following areas:

  • Innovation: Continue investing in product research and development to ensure that our products remain competitive in this rapidly evolving fintech landscape. Additionally, to ensure our products are powered by advanced technology to drive improvements in efficiency, accessibility, and user experience.
  • Customer-centricity: Prioritise understanding the needs of our customers and ensuring our products are solutions to their pain points. On top of that, establishing feedback loops with customers to help identify issues, concerns, and opportunities for improvement, enabling JurisTech to iterate and enhance our product offerings. We aim to provide the right technology and consistently deliver our software with excellence, ensuring the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Collaboration: To work closely with our customers and fintech ecosystem partners to foster an environment where we can come together to exchange ideas and knowledge. This helps to identify areas for improvement and to co-create solutions that address customer’s pain points. We believe having a collaborative atmosphere fuels innovation by combining different areas of expertise and perspectives. Thus, creating a more holistic customer experience and personalised financial services.
  • Agility: Continue being an agile company by adopting agile methodologies in our product development. This enables us to respond quickly to changing market conditions and customer needs. On top of prioritising continuous improvement and learning to ensure our products remain relevant and effective.
  • Overall, we believe that these strategies will enable us to continuously deliver high-quality software solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers and the market. We are committed to remaining at the forefront of the fintech industry and to leveraging our expertise and experience to drive innovation and growth within the company.

5. Share with us your personal victories in your career in JurisTech and what were the obstacles you managed to overcome.

I started off my career as a technical guy. In my mind, doing sales was not something I would want to do because it involved presentation, talking, and selling to people. However, I was entrusted with starting the Presales unit within JurisTech. It wasn’t an easy transition as I was expected to adopt a more “sales-y” mindset, learning the art of selling, instead of just looking at codes which I was more comfortable with. However, at the end of it, this experience opened my mind to learning that sales is applicable in every aspect of our lives, regardless of our roles. In fact, I would dare say, that even technical guys need to know how to sell the value of their products or else no one would be using them!

Yan Lun is always keen on bringing fresh ideas and viewpoints to ensure we create innovative solutions and product experiences that are invaluable to the user, the company, and the financial industry.

“As a CPO in JurisTech, I’m thrilled to be at the forefront of digital transformation, helping our clients navigate the rapidly evolving landscape and achieve their goals. Our innovative technology solutions empower our clients to stay ahead of the curve and drive business growth, and I’m excited to be a part of this journey!” Chief Product Officer of JurisTech, Tan Yan Lun

JurisTech had the delightful opportunity on July 25, 2023, to be the gracious host to a group of 30 students and two respected professors hailing from Delft University, Netherlands. The students and professors were treated to an enthralling and insightful talk about the Fintech landscape in Malaysia, complemented by an interactive tour of JurisTech’s office premises. The company’s esteemed CEO, See Wai Hun, and accomplished COO, Naaman Lee, took center stage to deliver a truly enriching presentation, generously sharing invaluable insights into the intricate and dynamic Malaysian financial landscape. The students, pursuing their master’s studies in mathematics and computer science, found themselves immersed in a world of knowledge and expertise that left a lasting impression on their academic journey.

As the students and professors arrived in the morning, they were embraced with genuine Malaysian warmth and hospitality, which manifested in a delectable feast of traditional breakfast delights. Naaman, with enthusiasm, introduced the cultural significance of each breakfast item meticulously prepared by JurisTech for both the students and professors, fostering a deeper connection to the local cuisine.

The event then commenced to Wai Hun providing a concise introduction to JurisTech, highlighting the company’s instrumental role in propelling the evolution of the banking and financial sectors through groundbreaking software solutions. With a global presence spanning ten countries, JurisTech ambitiously aims to serve 100 institutions across these countries by 2028, showcasing an unwavering commitment to driving innovation.

Moving forward, Wai Hun delved into the three distinct ages of Fintech. Fintech 1.0, the initial phase, focused on establishing the foundation for global financial services, paving the way for its future significance. The emergence of Fintech 2.0 saw the transition from analog to digital processes, fueled by the widespread adoption of smartphones and financial mobile applications. Finally, Fintech 3.0 marked a regulatory opening that welcomed diverse Fintech players, fostering a dynamic and vibrant financial landscape.

The Three Fintech Ages

Besides, Wai Hun also talked about digital banks—a transformative aspect in the financial industry. Operated entirely online, with no physical branches, digital banks deliver financial services through user-friendly mobile apps and websites. Leveraging advanced technologies like AI and automation, these banks offer innovative products with transparent pricing. The seamless and convenient customer journey, from account opening to customer service, appeals to tech-savvy individuals, contributing to the exponential growth of digital banking.

Wai Hun elaborated on the crucial role of digital banks in promoting financial inclusion, especially for underserved markets like SMEs and startups, as well as low-income individuals and millennials. The issuance of digital banking licenses by Bank Negara in Malaysia has bridged the financial services gap for these businesses, ushering in convenient and cost-effective solutions. By harnessing technology, digital banks streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and lower costs, positioning them as pioneers of financial innovation.

Following the insightful session, Wai Hun guided the students to engage in an invigorating brain writing session. The primary goals of this session were twofold: to swiftly amass a substantial collection of potential solutions and to optimise the prospects of generating innovative ideas within the set. The session acted as a catalyst, sparking the students’ creative faculties and propelling their minds to soar to new heights, resulting in a surge of ingenious ideas that held the promise of groundbreaking innovation.

With a profound desire to absorb the valuable knowledge shared by Wai Hun and Naaman, the students were eager to engage in meaningful discussions and embrace the enlightening perspectives offered by these esteemed leaders.

Following the enlightening Q&A session, our esteemed Senior Marketing Analyst, Abdullah Al Hindi, graciously invited the students and professors on an immersive office tour. With Abdullah and other dedicated employees as guides, the students and professors were organised into groups, allowing them to explore various untis at JurisTech. Each unit’s representatives offered detailed insights into their roles, providing valuable glimpses into the company’s inner workings and vibrant culture.

Penned down by a Marketing and Communications Intern

Internship at JurisTech

Excitement. Fear. Anxiety. Happiness. These are the emotions that best describe what I went through during my first day of internship at JurisTech. As a university student studying Communications, stepping foot into the Financial Technology (Fintech) industry is both challenging and exciting. I wasn’t well-versed in this industry but I knew that if I put my mind to it, I would soon gain a better understanding of it eventually. Thankfully, it turned out to be a memorable, impactful, and pleasant journey after all. Reason being, since my first day in JurisTech, everyone has been so helpful and understanding in teaching and guiding me. This made my onboarding and assimilation process to the company much easier. Throughout the 4 months of getting to know JurisTech as a company, its culture, and its employees; I was so happy that I applied for a permanent position. You might be wondering, what happened in those 4 months that made me want to continue staying in the company. Well, here’s my story.

The Company Culture

From my internship experience in JurisTech, I can proudly say that the company culture is one of the best! Every little thing that the company does, the aim is always to make the employee’s life better and to build a better working environment. I really love the flexible working hours in JurisTech. I could come in anytime from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. to work. The freedom and flexibility means a lot to my mental health. The fact that the company trusts me enough to deliver and produce quality work and I’m at the liberty to work at my own pace, was a major contribution to why I was able to excel during my internship. Moreover, not having to rush to the office during the rush hour was the cherry on top of the cake. With the hybrid working model,  my team spent 2 working days in the office and 3 days working from home. I love how productive I’m working from the comfort of my own home, where it is not too noisy and crowded; and how I still get to see and interact with my coworkers physically, building team work and team collaboration. I would say it’s the best of both worlds, truly.

Diving Head First

Initially, I had this idea that being an intern means I’m just doing minor work. But that didn’t happen during my time in the Marketing and Communications (MaC) team. Since Day 1, they took me in as a part of their team and they looked at me as if I were in the same position as them. They gave me real responsibilities and challenges that made me want to be excellent. In my first week of work, I was assigned to do a social media post, which was a big deal because it would be blasted across all the company’s social media platforms. It was nerve wracking to hold such a big responsibility. However, the team believed in me and encouraged me to be brave. Looking at my designs being posted for the very first time to such a vast reach of people, it was a very proud moment for me. Every week since then, I have been joining them in meetings, designing posts, creating reels, running, planning and executing internal events, and so on. I am so grateful that they gave me an amazing experience working in the Fintech industry. In fact, I had the opportunity to handle real responsibilities and my team always gave credit to my work. I was never “just an intern” or hidden in the shadows.

Working together with the Heroes Training Academy (HTA) to run JurisTech Hackathon 2022

Working Hand-in-Hand

Part of my internship experience as a marketer was to curate content for JurisTech’s social media channels such as creating instagram reels, short snippet video interviews, and so on. In one of the videos, I had to interview several Jurisians. It was frightening at first because as a newbie, I hardly knew anyone. But to my surprise, everyone I contacted were really supportive and they gave their very best for the video. I was amazed at how the employees from different departments can work together so well. Even with their busy schedules, they were still willing to set aside time and kept me as one of their priorities in building the video content. I also had the privilege to attend the JurisTech Annual Dinner at the end of 2022. I could see all the employees knew each other and were having fun mingling with one another. I am grateful that I am part of a team that works together as a family.

At JurisTech Annual Dinner with MaC and Picasso team members

Finding JurisTech and working here has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. It has been a roller-coaster ride of emotions but it’s one that I’ll remember the most. Thank you to my MaC team members who made learning so fun, who pushed me to be better at doing what I do, and for embracing me as part of the team. I will never forget your contributions to my growth. A big thank you to JurisTech for creating a welcoming, safe and comfortable working environment for all employees and truly embodying your core values, G.E.C.O. – Growing Heroes; Making Excellence Happen; Customer First;  and Opening Up.

On 9th November 2022, Asia Pacific University (APU) invited JurisTech to their physical event titled “Fintech Talk: Diving Into The New Financial Landscape”. Our Chief Innovation Officer, Hosein Abedinpourshotorban, went to the university campus to share insights and knowledge with the students on the future of Fintech.

Hosein and JurisTech’s representatives were greeted warmly by the university as well as 70 students that attended the talk and were eager to learn about Fintech. Hosein started by giving a short introduction about himself, his career path in JurisTech and his background. He then brings up the energy of the audience with a short ice-breaking game before diving deeper into the Fintech industry. Hosein then introduced JurisTech to the attendees and students, telling them what JurisTech does and how the company contributes to the financial market in Malaysia and international markets by providing solutions to banks and financial institutions.

Introduction by Hosein

Hosein then moved to explain the four industrial revolutions throughout the years. He shared how the world has evolved over the years to where we are now. He mentioned how during the first industrial revolution between 1765 – 1870, technology started to evolve, where human civilisation explored new ways to build machines to automate mass production. During this time, businesses were starting to rise across the world with the help of loans from banks that enabled businessmen to expand their businesses. He then shared that several decades went by and the second industrial revolution began in 1870. The Technological Revolution was a phase of rapid scientific discovery, standardisation, mass production, and industrialisation.

The Four Industrial Revolutions

Hosein highlighted that during the third industrial revolution between 1970 – 2000, the world went through a massive change due to the Digital Revolution. Not only telephones, but computers were starting to grow in popularity globally. With the rapid advancement of computer technology, a lot of human work was taken over by machines. This resulted in a lot of workers being laid off and the industry changed significantly since they were not relying heavily on manpower to do most of the work.

Last but not least, Hosein introduced The Smart Era, which continues to this day, and is characterised by the introduction of the Internet and thus increasing digitisation. He shared that the “Internet of Things” (IoT) is already integrated into many companies and our everyday lives, and we can no longer imagine life without it. By connecting machines or everyday objects with the internet, devices are able to perform tasks with complete automation.

Now, how will The Smart Era (Industry 4.0) disrupt the financial industry? Before going further, Hosein shared more on the ins and outs of the Fintech industry. He described Fintech in the way it uses technologies, products, and business models to compete with traditional financial methods. He also talked about the three ages of Fintech.

The Three Fintech Ages

Diving further into the financial landscape, Hosein shares more on new digitalisation areas, starting with digital banks. He started off by explaining the difference between a digital bank and a neo bank. He also explained the advantages of using digital banks and how it is catered carefully towards customer experience. He further spoke about customer experience and how inconvenient it was for customers to do banking in the past, from the process of going to the bank and the amount of paperwork and the time spent on waiting. However, now digital banks have made it their mission to enhance the customer experience by creating new digital banking alternatives such as an omnichannel banking experience anywhere across the world, accessible public transport by application, in-house financial advisors, transactions with cryptocurrencies, banking available 24/7, and free online bill paying systems.

Hosein then moved on to explain blockchain: the usage of blockchain, how it connects to cryptocurrencies and the types of blockchain technology. He also explained the significant role that blockchain has in the financial industry with regard to payments, clearance and settlement systems, customer KYC, fraud prevention, loan, credit, security, and fundraising.  Hosein also explained where blockchain is heading by providing a list of companies that are using blockchain in their business.

Source: Blockdata

Last but not least, Hosein talked about artificial intelligence and how it has helped the financial industry. He elaborated on three primary disciplines of AI namely, computer vision, natural processing language, and machine learning. Then, Hosein explained how AI makes financing accessible by using alternative methods such as alternative financial service data, rental payments, asset ownership, utility payments, full file public records, consumer permissioned data, and mobile data.

With these new digitalisation areas such as digital banks, blockchains, and artificial intelligence, the Fintech industry is already being disrupted. He wrapped up by bringing it into a full circle as to how industry 4.0 had enabled such disruption.

Coming towards the end of the event, APU shared a token of appreciation for Hosein and JurisTech. After the event, the university representative gave an insightful tour around their campus and ended the day with lunch together.

SHRDC, career talk, career

On 3rd November 2022, Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC) invited JurisTech to give an insightful virtual talk on how future graduates can launch a successful career in the tech industry. SHRDC is a talent and skills development centre that provides technical competency-based training as well as management and leadership skills training for individuals and businesses. Our welcomed Recruitment Specialist, Carmen Tan, gave the virtual talk to over 20 participants who were graduates from IT and Engineering backgrounds.

After kicking in a fun ice-breaking session, Carmen moved to introduce JurisTech’s background and history from when our CEO, See Wai Hun, and CTO, John Lim, founded JurisTech in 1997. She shared how JurisTech has grown to become one of the fastest-growing Fintech companies in Malaysia over the past 20 years, celebrating multiple milestones and achievements. Throughout the years, JurisTech has been developing transformative software solutions for banks and financial players, streamlining new ways customers can consume banking and financial products. Carmen also accentuated how JurisTech has grown an international presence in 9 countries, as part of its vision or ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’ to reach 100 institutions in 10 different countries in 10 years by 2028.

Carmen then moved on to share more about JurisTech’s work culture and how we incorporate four core values across the company namely, Growing Heroes, Making Excellence Happen, Customer First, and Opening Up, or GECO in short. These values are embedded at the heart of JurisTech and are a reflection of how our employees foster working relationships with all stakeholders of the company to induce higher productivity and work inclusivity. Carmen also added how JurisTech harbours a work-life balance where employees can enjoy a myriad of facilities in the office from making your perfect cup of coffee at our coffee bar, sharing a conversion or just kicking it back at our ‘Heroes Corner’, to indulging in a number of games at our entertainment zone such as playing pool, futsal, table tennis, and more! Employees can also enjoy flexible working hours coming to the office anytime between 7 am – 11 am as long as they adhere to a 9-hour work schedule.

Carmen then moved to share the key roles and positions in JurisTech. As a leading Fintech company in providing credit management software solutions to financial industry players, JurisTech takes pride in hiring exceptional software engineers (SE) and professional services engineers (PS). The career paths for SEs and PSs are both rewarding as their roles in the company drive new levels of product innovations as well as act as key roles in steering the company to success. Carmen emphasised how some of JurisTech’s earliest SE and PS joiners have now become company leaders and directors within a decade.

Carmen also shares how candidates applying to JurisTech with no prior tech background can also become Professional Services Engineers through our Heroes Training Academy (HTA). HTA is a unit dedicated to training new hires to go through a 2-week onboarding and training session to be equipped with the essential skills needed to start their tech journey.

Coming to the end of the talk, Carmen enlightened the audience with a number of valuable pieces of advice for graduates to kick start their careers from building their work résumés and digital profiles to sharing interview best practices and methods to successfully land a job.

The talk ended in a fruitful Q&A session followed by a warm appreciation and gratitude to Carmen for imparting invaluable knowledge to the participants.

On the 25th of August, our Chief Executive Officer, See Wai Hun, was cordially invited by Perdana Leadership Foundation as a panellist in the Perdana Discourse Series 22 to shed light on the topic of ‘Envisioning Malaysia’s Future Employment: Trends vs Skills’. The Perdana Leadership Foundation was established in 2003 to preserve, research, and disseminate materials on, and by, Malaysia’s past Prime Ministers.

The Perdana Discourse Series is among many of the Foundation’s initiatives to host intellectual discourses on unique topics that will help identify modes pertinent to resolving issues related to nation-building and developing a progressive society in Malaysia.

At the beginning of the Discourse Series, opening remarks were shared with a welcome address by YBhg Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Executive Director, Perdana Leadership Foundation. It was followed by a keynote address by YBhg Professor Elizabeth Lee, Chief Executive Officer, of Sunway Education Group. Professor touched on many expansive works of digitalisation in the Malaysian economy sharing employment trends in Malaysia, skills aligned to the nation’s development goals, and new sustainable youth development initiatives from Sunway Education Group.

After a brief break, our CEO, See Wai Hun was invited on stage to join the panel session along with guest panel speakers, Dato’ Ahmad Nadzarudin bin Abdul Razak (Honorary Treasurer, MEF), Puan Noraliza Mohamad Ali (Senior Deputy Executive Director of Employment and Unemployment Division, Malaysian Bureau of Labour Statistics), and Dr Soo Wincci (Associate Professor, UiTM) who was moderating the panel discussion.

Dr Soo first opened the floor to Dato’ Nadzarudin to share what the future of employment looks like for Malaysia. He dived into the topic of recent emerging trends such as the growing significance of the gig economy, the increasing importance of TVET education, new regulations over work and employment, and the decreasing importance of university education.

Wai Hun followed by sharing some of the concerns and expectations of Malaysian employers today where she touched on the growing competition for talent in Malaysia. She shared that with Malaysia’s economy growing back to normal, companies have been hiring again like wildfire with unprecedented levels of outreach. She further mentions how the increase in competition has resulted in employers facing challenges in talent retention due to talent shortage. Wai Hun also adds how skilled workers with in-demand skills are slowly becoming less loyal to employers, having new visions of more flexible work roles. This poses a challenge for employers to support or facilitate new levels of growing needs e.g. upskilling training programmes and flexible working hours.

“The workplace today should not be focused on talent retention alone, its focus should expand on the flexibility and efficiency of employees.” – See Wai Hun

Wai Hun further talks about some of the expectations employers are looking for in talents. Leading a major Fintech company, Wai Hun shares the importance of acquiring various skill sets and abilities in talents to overcome different unique work challenges. She shares how the nature of JurisTech’s hiring culture always seeks extraordinary talent who possess positive traits in personality, working ability, and culture adaptability. Wai Hun further emphasises how talents who display their personality traits should uphold a positive attitude and strong ambition as high achievers. Secondly, she highlights the importance of seeking potential in candidates and not just focusing on the skills they can bring to the company. Finally, she discussed the importance of candidates’ ability to adapt to different company cultures to be able to fit in without any rising resistance.

Dr Soo then passes the floor to Puan Noraliza to share some of the job market insights in Malaysia. She shares how in Q1 of 2022, the job market saw an increase in job vacancies by 7.5% which equates to 191 thousand vacancies in semi-skilled and skilled jobs. She also shares statistics of 5.61 million graduates in 2021 of whom 4.57 million were employed while 197 thousand were left unemployed. She further elaborates how skill-related underemployment is not an isolated issue faced by Malaysia, wherein one-third of employment in many economies experienced similar situations.

Dr Wincci also asks Dato’ Nadzarudin’s view on the mismatch in expectations between graduates and the employment market. He mentions how the expectations placed upon both graduates and employers need to be able to match. In the past, he speaks on how there was a larger degree of unrealistic or even unmatched expectations between graduates and employers and how this mismatch needs to be addressed by researching how more graduates can be career ready to meet the growing expectations of the labour market.

Dr Winnci then passes the floor to Wai Hun to share her views on how Malaysia compares in work and lifestyle to its neighbouring countries. Wai Hun expresses her view on how other nations such as Singapore and Hong Kong pay salaries 2-3 times more than Malaysia, however, their living conditions are comparatively more expensive than Malaysia. She mentions how Malaysia’s living conditions are relatively better than other neighbouring economies and is on a steady climb after gradually recovering from the pandemic.

Dr Soo then poses a final question to all panellists to share their views on how they perceive to see changes in the business and economic landscapes in the next five years. Wai Hun takes the floor first by sharing how the economic and global recession, resulting from the pandemic, has been creating new opportunities for economic and growth recovery. Businesses are becoming more digital-centric, remodelling their business structure to adopt more technologies to create more seamless user journeys. She also adds how the e-commerce industry has boomed over the last 2 years. In terms of the job market, she extrapolates how the rising changes for employers to retain more tech-savvy candidates should not be overlooked by graduates, and graduates should adopt a multiplier mindset to build on growing skill sets from changing demands in the job market.

Dato’ Nadzarudin adds that businesses will grow bigger in the next 5 years and at the same time self-employment will also increase. He shares that with the growing consumer market, businesses will indefinitely grow, especially with the government signing new trade market agreements internationally to access more foreign goods. Puan Noraliza finally closes by sharing how both governments and businesses should work closely and collectively to address many of the employment challenges today to provide for more inclusive and decent working conditions for the Malaysian people.

The event finally ended with a presentation of a token of appreciation to the moderator and panellists by YBhg Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob for attending the Perdana Discourse Series 22, following a fruitful Q&A session.

career talk, purwadhika

After a fun ice-breaking session at the beginning of the talk, Sheryl shared more about JurisTech and how it came it become one of the fastest-growing Fintech companies in Malaysia. She shared how JurisTech was founded amidst the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 when founders, See Wai Hun and John Lim, recognised a gap in the financial industry’s recovery and legal services. This presented an opportunity to create a blue ocean by shifting their primary focus on creating solutions that would be vital to helping banks and financial institutions. JurisTech has since expanded its digital footprint in 9 countries internationally, developing credit management solutions catered toward digitalising and transforming financial players.

Sheryl further talks about JurisTech’s working culture and accentuates how the growth of the company has been the result of its growing cultural and core values that are constantly embraced by all Jurisians. These core values are known as our GECO values namely, Growing Heroes, Making Excellence Happen, Customer First, and Opening Up. Sheryl also shared how JurisTech has always welcomed talent from all around the world, with employees from over 12 countries. She also shared how the company have recently started hiring software engineers to work remotely.

career talk, purwadhika

Kiarash then took to the stage to share more about the working life of software engineers at JurisTech. He first opened up to the students by sharing his humble beginnings as a graduand software engineer from Multimedia University in early 2012, and how he stumbled to land an internship opportunity at JurisTech at a campus career fair. After completing his internship, he stayed with JurisTech and had the opportunity to experience and grow with different roles and responsibilities.  Along the way, he grew from being a Junior Developer, Technical Lead, and Head of R&D, rising to upper management positions as a Chief Innovation Officer and currently standing as Chief Information Officer.

After a brief introduction, Kiarash shared with the students what being a full-stack developer is. He mentions them as individuals who can develop both client and server software, while continuously expanding their knowledge, design skills, and understanding in a variety of fields such as front-end, back-end, databases, and CI/CD to create effective software that delivers value to customers.

Kiarash then continued to share the roles software engineers play at JurisTech as problem solvers, who design and develop solutions to meet clients’ expectations. They also act as consultants, using their in-depth technical knowledge to work with multiple stakeholders such as the development team, supporting units, management team, clients, and 3rd-party vendors. Kiarash shares how software engineers’ efforts to work with multiple stakeholders help to create feasible and effective solutions while contributing to many areas from ideation to implementation, deployment and support.

Kiarash also introduced what the typical career path for a software engineer looks like from when they first join as a Junior Developer and grow to become a Technical Architect (as shown in the image below).

Kiarash then ends his talk by sharing insightful career advice to the students on how they can ace their technical interviews with the following points

  1. Carry a confident personality but be honest about what you don’t know
  2. Show a passion for continuous learning
  3. Be a team player, someone that is easy to work with
  4. Show strong and fundamental technical understanding

At the end of the talk, the students and organisers all thanked Sheryl and Kiarash for sharing about the company, inspirational journeys, and taking the opportunity to help them develop their careers.

career forum, career-ready

In the ever-changing economy where the COVID-19 pandemic had taken huge tolls on businesses and industries in the past two years, it had resulted in an economical shift in adopting new digital technologies to sustain itself and fall from going into a recession. Much the same can be said of how students and graduates alike have been impacted by the pandemic. In a recent career forum organised by GTI Media on 14th June, talent acquisition experts along with JurisTech’s Chief Operations Officer, Naaman Lee, were invited to a panel discussion on how students and graduates can upskill themselves to be career-ready in a digital growing economy in Malaysia.

Amongst the panel were Sophia Ang, Head of Talent Attraction (Maybank), Eliana Anuar, Head of Employer Branding (EY), and Kenneth Tan, Head of HR (Shopee) with Isaac Hee, Managing Director (GTI Media) moderating the discussion. After a brief round of introductions, the panellists jumped into the topic of discussion being ‘Upskill for better career readiness’ where an abundance of knowledge was imparted to over 100 participants. Isaac began by sharing the first question with the panel.

What does it mean to be career-ready?

Eliana moved first by sharing how being career-ready means knowing that you’re able to demonstrate your accountability and your effective work habits to have the highest increase of productivity in the workplace. Kenneth further draws a comparison between candidates who are career-ready as opposed to those who are not. He shared key differences in how both carry themselves differently in terms of bringing over a sense of professionalism, eagerness, and enthusiasm that makes them stand out from one another.

Naaman adds in by sharing two different perspectives coming from both employers and students. From an employer’s perspective, there are expectations of what values candidates can bring over from the course of their academic years into the workforce. While from a student’s perspective delves more into what kind of fundamental knowledge they have gained that would set them to be ready in an interview while meeting employers’ expectations. Naaman also accentuated Kenneth’s point on the importance of showing characteristics of enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn to divide yourself from other candidates by sharing unique attributes and strong ambitions.

Sophia ends the discussion by adding how the essence of employers is to look into establishing various types of platforms and enabling talent to showcase what they have to offer. She further mentions how important it is for candidates to display the application of their knowledge and skills during practical interviews to support all the credentials and qualifications they’ve achieved during their academic years.

After sharing a quick summary and highlighting some key points from the panellists, Isaac moves to the next question.

What are some of the ways you have been upskilling yourself to stay relevant in your career journey?

Sophia began by sharing how she pivoted in her career journeying through several career paths in biotech, banking, and now venturing into human resources, further explaining how a degree doesn’t necessarily define your career path. She mentions how we are all part of an ecosystem where everyone needs to find out what role fits them best and the value they can bring to the table. Kenneth adds how he came from an unconventional background in archaeology and through learning and experimenting with job scopes out of his major did he find passion in working as a talent recruiter.

Naaman shared how he started out his career coming from a mechanical engineering major and now moved to oversee over 100+ software engineers and business analysts at JurisTech. He mentions 3 important quality attributes that he practices in any work stance namely observation, application, and rationality. He shares how all 3 attributes have come into play together all while accelerating his lifelong journey of building a prosperous career. He closes off by sharing how cultivating the mindset of intentionality is a key part of the upskilling process.

Eliana also shared her array of work experiences majoring in mass communication and working with creative and FMCG media outlets to now working in the professional services industry. She advises on the importance of building a plan ahead to lead and direct your career path and creating a roadmap on what you foresee becoming down the years.

Isaac also reciprocates his share of experiences being part of the unconventional career trajectory club majoring in classical-era history and human renaissance before moving to the final question.

What are the current changes happening in your respective industry?

Naaman started off by sharing how so much is happening in the IT world now at a pace that is mind-blowing and nearly impossible to keep up with. Technology today is the driving force for every industry, drastically shifting physical businesses to adopt a digital presence. However, he mentions how great ideas and innovations in AI, blockchain, and digital banking have their dark counterparts such as crypto hacking and personal data theft. He also adds how disinformation is becoming prevalent due to technological advancements while also sharing a report by Gartner on false information spreading 6 times as fast as factual information. Naaman concludes by sharing how JurisTech’s work aims to bring good to the economy with the end goal to achieve financial inclusion, where JurisTech’s solutions look to enable banks and financial institutions to give out loans faster and more accurately.

Eliana shared how working in the professional services industry today has seen new changes in digital transformation and how many clients are adopting new technology to build resilience in supply chains, mitigate risks, optimise business performance, and create new lines of services and products. This has resulted in a spike in talent demand for tech and these trends are seen to continue over the next few years.

Sophia adds the topic of the recent announcement of the issuance of digital banking licences and how banks today are gradually providing unconventional services to new and growing consumer demands. From an industry standpoint, she explains how there are no longer company-exclusive services but more business partnerships to navigate around the growing needs of today’s consumer market.

Kenneth shares his perception of how things are starting to converge for traditional industries that are going into less conventional activities and growing more digitally to sustain themselves and stay relevant. He mentions how the world now is gradually moving towards the endemic phase where there’s become a pivot in consumer behaviour and a catalyst in technology adoption rates, compared to times when people were less prone to using tech such as e-commerce due to fear of identity theft, fraud, and several other risks.

After a fruitful discussion amongst all panel members, they move to the Q&A session where the audience shared a number of underlying questions pertaining to career advice and best practices to successfully land a job in now a more tech demanding job market. Isaac finally wraps the session by sharing his warm gratitude to the panellists for instilling knowledge that would otherwise be vital for students and graduates today.
